Desert of My Real Life

{June 12, 2013}   A Possible Return

I have been away for an entire academic year. It was my intention this year to find time to regularly write entries about various technology and society issues. But it didn’t happen. I blame the fact that I’ve been a department chair for two years now. The increased administrative tasks that come with being chair leave me fairly mentally exhausted so that the only scholarly activities that I’ve engaged in are things that result in actual presentations or publications. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t thought about blog topics, however.

So I’m declaring it here as a way to hold myself accountable. My goal for the upcoming academic year is to write at least one blog entry per week. It feels daunting but so worthwhile since I like thinking about technology issues way more than I like doing administrative tasks. I need to make the time for this.

OK, I’ve read your post, so it’s for realz. I will hold you accountable. Actually, I’m going to send you a link about accountability…. maybe we can help each other out! 🙂

Maybe one thing you can do this summer is start and keep a list of “technology and society” issues you’d like to write about. So you don’t have to start from zero in August/September. I find that planning to write helps the writing happen. And plants seeds for thought in your brain. And makes you feel like you’re doing SOMETHING. Actually, I’ll bet you already have a list going…. 🙂

Thanks, Liz! Yes, I already have a list going. In fact, many of the items on the list are so old that it would make no sense to write about them anymore. My list used to motivate me to write regularly. Somehow, in the excuses that being a department chair gives me, the list has lost its motivational power. Just knowing that you are paying attention, however, could be enough to motivate me. And thanks for the accountability link! My intention is to write one blog entry per week. Starting now.

Josh says:

I also still follow your blog and look forward to reading your thoughts on technology and society again. Cheers!

Thanks, Josh! I’m working on the next entry and hope to post it tonight!
